Is Steve Jobs winning the battle with Adobe? According to MeFeedia, 26% of all internet video is now available in H264 format. Only 10% of videos were available in H264 format back in January. MeFeedia is a media search website that features videos, TV shows, movies, and music among other material. From time to time MeFeedia analyzes its index to look for trends. One of the trends MeFeedia is looking is how much of the video on the Web is encoded only in Flash and how much in H264 and HTML-5. MeFeedia also found that most sites that support HTML5 will detect iPad users and switch to an HTML5-compatible format, (only YouTube enables this functionality on their embeds on other sites, though). For News, recent stories are available, but most back library content is not yet re-encoded. There is very little HTML5 supported episodic content available from major TV networks (ABC has an app, but no full episodes available on their website).
Apple is fighting with Adobe on internet standards including video encoding and delivery format. Recently Apple restricted developers from utilizing any third-party platforms with iPhone OS 4. Steve Jobs issued a public letter explaining Apple position. Adobe followed with a Wall Street Journal interview as well as a public letter from its co-founders.
