Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry, plans to raise workers’ salaries by about 20 percent at its Foxconn unit in China, in an attempt to stop worker suicides and quell rising public anger. According to the company, the raise was scheduled well before the suicides issue. An employee of Foxconn, jumped to his death late on Wednesday, bringing the total of such apparent suicides to 10 this year. Foxconn pays 110,000 Yuan ($16,100) to the family of each person who dies. Basic monthly wages start at 900 Yuan a month ($130), so the 110,000 Yuan ($16,000) pay-out to the deceased’s families is almost worth ending your life. Apple is investigating the issue as if this continues will have an impact on the company’s image. ”We are saddened and upset by the recent suicides at Foxconn,” Apple said in a statement. “Apple is deeply committed to ensuring that conditions throughout our supply chain are safe and workers are treated with respect and dignity. We are in direct contact with Foxconn senior management and we believe they are taking this matter very seriously,” Apple continued.
