Apple today announced FaceTime, a new Video Call feature of iPhone 4. “People have been dreaming about video calling for decades. iPhone 4 makes it a reality. With the tap of a button, you can wave hello to your kids, share a smile from across the globe, or watch your best friend laugh at your stories — iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi. No other phone makes staying in touch this much fun,” Apple mentions in its website. While in a call, users can tap the FaceTime icon and an invitation pops up on the other party’s iPhone screen asking if they want to join. When they accept, the video call begins automatically and the screen fills with the other party video. Users can see their own video in a smaller size in the corner. The feature supports both cameras, back and front. Steve Jobs announced during the 2010 Worldwide Developers Conference that Apple will make FaceTime protocol “open standard”. In addition, the feature is free for all iPhone 4 users to use. FaceTime is enabled only over Wi-Fi and Jobs said that Apple is working with the carriers to enable the feature over 3G as well.
