According to developers familiar with Apple’s plans, the new iOS 4 brings a series of improvements that move the core of iPhone OS from Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard level to modern Snow Leopard level. When Steve Jobs announced iPhone in 2007, he said that iPhone OS was based on Mac OS X. Now, Apple is making changes to bring the functionality and core of its mobile OS to the same level with its desktop OS. One of the improvements is the support of Blocks to support Grand Central Dispatch, which queues up and schedules them for execution, potentially in parallel on multiple processor cores. We should expect a multicore mobile device from Apple in the future. Other improvements include SSL VPN support, networking support for IPv6 addressing and DNS, support for powerful regular expression tools for pattern matching, search, and replacement of text content and more. With these changes and improvements, Apple is positioning itself to be able to support more advanced hardware with its mobile OS in the future.
