“Patently Apple” reports on a new Apple Bicycle System patent the company is working on. Smart Bicycle System will allow cyclists to monitor various data while they are using the system. The concept is similar to Nike+ but for cyclists. The Bicycle system will monitor speed, distance, time, altitude, elevation, incline, decline, heart rate, power, derailleur setting, cadence, wind speed, path completed, expected future path, heart rate, power, and pace. The system could utilize various sensors built-into the iPhone in addition to working with sensors already built-into the bike itself. The system is intended for individuals, but it’s also designed to work with teams of cyclists so that they could communicate with each other. Users will be able to map their own bike courses on a map or view bike courses of other riders. Additionally, the patent points to the iPhone having the ability to retrieve directions (e.g., turn-by-turn directions) for accessing or following a route or course. The system may also work with services such as Google’s Street View that will indicate landmarks and so forth.
