It looks like Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, was this close to receive the Knighthood honor, a title that his rival Bill Gates and his friend Bono already carry. According to The Telegraph, then Prime Minister Gordon Brown was in favor for the honor. “Apple has been the only major global company to create stunning consumer products because it has always taken design as the key component of everything it has produced. No other CEO has consistently shown such a commitment,” Brown said. However the Prime Minister’s office rejected the idea. Brown was told by the office that the decision was related to a failed attempt to attract Mr Jobs to Labour’s annual conference. Given his status as a superstar of business and technology, such an appearance would have been viewed as a coup for Mr Brown.
Jobs is currently battling with health issues. He sent a message to all Apple employees in January notify them that he will get a Leave of Absence to focus on his health. In 2004 Jobs had surgery to address pancreatic cancer. In 2009 he received a liver transplant.
It is unknown when he will return but in his message said that he will “be involved in major strategic decisions for the company”. In his absence, Tim Cook will handle the day-to-day operations.
Jobs is one of the co-founders of Apple and after leaving the company for a short time he returned in 1996. He almost single handedly took Apple’s stock from $5 in 1996 to almost $350 today making Apple the largest technology company in the US with market capitalization of about $320 billion.
